Springfield Armory has added the shortest-barrel variant yet to its 1911 DS Prodigy double-stack lineup, unveiling the 1911 DS Prodigy 3.5" Compact AOS on August 18. The new 9mm pistol pairs a 3.5-inch forged stainless steel bull barrel with the same full double-stack grip frame found across the Prodigy line, trimming overall length to 7 inches and height to 5.1 inches while shipping with two 15-round magazines and keeping the platform's optics-ready system intact. MSRP is $1,582, and a 10-round variant is available for buyers in restricted-capacity states.

The barrel is machined to match-grade bull specifications with a 1:16 twist rate and finished in black diamond-like carbon coating for abrasion resistance. The slide is forged carbon steel with Cerakote, the frame is billet 7075-T6 aluminum also Cerakote-finished, and the assembly weighs 25.5 ounces unloaded. Iron sights are tritium front and black serrated rear. The slide is cut for Springfield's AOS optics plate system — the same modular interface standard across the Prodigy lineup — and ships with one cover plate and one optics plate. Springfield includes a $49 coupon for a second plate in the buyer's footprint of choice.

The 3.5-inch Compact fills the bottom of a barrel-length spectrum that previously ran from 4.25 inches up to 5 inches. For buyers who want the Prodigy's double-stack capacity and 2011-style ergonomics in a smaller package for concealed carry or smaller-handed shooters, the compact delivers without dropping the optics capability that has made the platform popular for competition and duty use. The forged bull barrel design, shared across the Prodigy family, eliminates the barrel bushing, keeping takedown to a push-and-rotate process with no additional tools.

Personal Defense World covered the launch and described the compact's combination of full-grip ergonomics and shorter slide as well-suited for holster configurations where overall length is constrained. The Firearm Blog noted on release day that a review unit was already in hand, with range results to follow. The 3.5-inch model competes in the growing market of commander-length and compact 2011-style pistols alongside offerings from Staccato, Tisas, and other manufacturers who have moved aggressively into the double-stack 1911 space.

Buyers interested in the 1911 DS Prodigy 3.5" Compact AOS can check availability through Springfield Armory dealers nationwide; both the standard and restricted-capacity variants are listed in the current product catalog. Springfield Armory has not announced a separate dealer-availability date, though multiple outlets covering the August 18 release indicated distribution was already underway.
