Springfield Armory announced on October 28, 2026 that Spain's Policía Nacional — the country's federal-level National Police Corps — has selected the Echelon 4.0FC as its new standard-issue service pistol, replacing a fleet of Heckler & Koch USP Compacts in service across uniformed officers. The contract covers a reported 6,000-plus units. AmmoLand first reported the announcement.
The Policía Nacional subjected the Echelon 4.0FC to a formal qualification process under Spain's Interior Ministry procurement framework, evaluating accuracy, barrel obstruction resistance, extreme-temperature performance, drop safety, and parts interchangeability. The 4.0FC passed all categories and emerged as the selection over competing platforms from other manufacturers. Dennis Reese, owner and CEO of Springfield Armory, said in a statement that the selection was an honor for both the company and HS Produkt, the Croatian manufacturer that co-developed the Echelon chassis and handles production in partnership with Springfield.
The Echelon 4.0FC was introduced at SHOT Show in January 2026 as a crossover configuration within the Echelon family, pairing a 4-inch barrel and compact-profile slide with a full-length grip frame. The hybrid layout gives officers a shorter muzzle for vehicle deployment and confined-space use while preserving full magazine capacity and a full-hand purchase on the grip. In the U.S. civilian market the 4.0FC carries an MSRP of $710. NRA's American Rifleman covered the model's debut at SHOT Show.
The Echelon platform is built around a serialized fire control chassis Springfield calls the Central Operating Group, which can move between different grip frames and slide lengths. The modularity offers a long-term maintenance and upgrade path that appeals to a department provisioning thousands of sidearms over a decade or more. The Variable Interface System optics rail, machined into the full length of the slide and accepting multiple optic footprints without adapter plates, was also reported as a factor in the Policía Nacional's evaluation.
The contract marks the Echelon 4.0FC's first major law enforcement adoption outside North America and the most significant foreign-government win for Springfield Armory to date. The Policía Nacional numbers roughly 67,000 officers, making it comparable in scale to a large U.S. federal law enforcement agency. RECOIL also covered the announcement. Further delivery timeline details and any contract options for additional units have not been released.
For U.S. buyers, the Spanish police adoption adds independent third-party validation of the Echelon 4.0FC — a full NATO-aligned procurement evaluation conducted by an agency with no stake in Springfield Armory's commercial success.
