SIG Sauer has added a pair of compact variants to its piston-driven SIG516 G3 platform, releasing an 11.5-inch pistol and an 11.5-inch short-barreled rifle, AmmoLand reported this week. The new models bring the same short-stroke piston system and fully ambidextrous controls of the existing SIG516 G3 carbine into a noticeably shorter overall package suited for vehicle work and close-quarters use.

SIG Sauer SIG516 G3 11.5" Pistol

11.5" barrel 5.56 NATO short-stroke piston AR pistol with Magpul BSL brace

The pistol variant ships with a Magpul BSL Arm Brace and uses an 11.5-inch cold hammer-forged, chrome-lined barrel chambered in 5.56 NATO. SIG's Matchlite Duo curved trigger and a 3-position adjustable gas block round out the spec sheet. The free-floating M-LOK handguard, non-reciprocating rear and side charging handles, and SIG Flash Hider Compensator carry over from the longer-barreled G3 models. At 11.5 inches, the pistol provides a substantially shorter platform than the 14.5-inch and 16-inch variants already in the line.

The SBR version swaps the brace for a six-position Magpul DT stock and is listed at 7.3 pounds with a magazine, with an overall length of 31.8 inches extended or 28.5 inches collapsed. Because the barrel falls below the 16-inch legal threshold and the rifle wears a shoulder stock, the SBR remains subject to National Firearms Act registration requirements. Buyers who want the compact form factor without the NFA paperwork process can use the braced pistol variant, which SIG offers as a factory-finished option for that market.

The SIG516 G3 platform has been a consistent presence in the piston-driven AR segment since SIG revived and updated the design. The G3 revision brought steel reinforcement in high-wear areas, a fully ambidextrous control set, and updated furniture to a platform that had built a following among shooters who prefer gas-piston reliability in demanding conditions. The addition of 11.5-inch models extends the lineup into a format long favored by law enforcement and military users for vehicle transport and confined-space engagements.

Pricing was not posted on SIG Sauer's website at time of publication. Both the 11.5-inch SIG516 G3 Pistol and SBR are now listed as available through SIG's authorized dealer network. Buyers eyeing the SBR should expect the standard NFA Form 4 transfer process through a licensed Class III dealer, though the evolving legal landscape around NFA registration requirements — including ongoing appellate proceedings — may affect that picture over the coming months.
