SIG Sauer has added the HYP to its rifle lineup, making the 6.8x51mm/.277 SIG FURY chambering available in a direct-impingement platform for the first time in its commercial history. Guns.com covered the launch on October 1. The HYP carries an MSRP of $2,729.99 and is in stock now at authorized SIG dealers — roughly a third the cost of the piston-driven MCX-SPEAR, which previously held a near-monopoly on the civilian 6.8x51 market.
6.8x51mm/.277 SIG FURY 16" DI rifle, 20-round mag, 8.7 lb
The 6.8x51, also marketed as .277 SIG FURY, was developed for the U.S. Army's Next Generation Squad Weapon program. It operates at significantly higher chamber pressures than standard rifle cartridges, which SIG manages with a hybrid case design combining a steel head with a brass body rated to 80,000 psi. The HYP addresses that pressure through a four-position adjustable mid-length direct impingement gas system that handles both suppressed and unsuppressed operation without user tools. The 16-inch cold hammer-forged barrel is threaded 5/8x24, rifled at 1:7, and chrome-lined. The HYP ships with a 20-round steel magazine, SIG's Matchlite DUO curved trigger, a free-floating M-LOK alloy handguard, and fully ambidextrous controls across the safety selector, charging handle, magazine release, and bolt catch and release. Overall length is 38 inches, or 35 with the stock collapsed. Unloaded weight is 8.7 pounds — competitive with other .308-class platforms and notably lighter than the piston-driven alternatives.
The DI platform broadens the practical appeal of the FURY cartridge for hunters, long-range shooters, and suppressor enthusiasts who prefer the AR-10 operating system and don't need a military-derived piston design. Commercial .277 FURY ammunition has expanded steadily since SIG, Federal Premium, and Winchester all manufacture loads for the cartridge. The MCX-SPEAR remains available for buyers who want the piston system; the HYP now gives the market a second option at a substantially lower entry point, and retail listings show initial inventory moving quickly.
Watch for dedicated suppressor manufacturers and optic mount makers to follow the HYP platform as the second, lower-cost 6.8x51 host establishes itself. SIG has not announced additional barrel lengths or configurations at this time.
