Remington Ammunition announced on August 31 that it was adding the 400 Legend to its Premier AccuTip centerfire rifle line, and the load is now shipping to dealers. The Outdoor Wire carried the initial press release; The Firearm Blog flagged the shipment in a recent industry roundup. The load is available at authorized Remington retailers nationwide.

Remington Premier AccuTip 400 Legend

195-grain straight-wall centerfire hunting ammo, 2215 fps MV, 20-round box

The 400 Legend is a straight-wall cartridge introduced by Winchester designed for AR-15 and bolt-action platforms, filling the gap between the smaller 350 Legend and the heavier 450 Bushmaster. The cartridge has built a following in the Midwest and other states where hunting regulations restrict centerfire rifle ammunition to straight-wall cases, a classification that permits the 400 Legend while excluding bottlenecked cartridges like .308 Win. or .30-06.

Remington's Premier AccuTip load pushes a 195-grain bullet to 2,215 feet per second at the muzzle. The AccuTip bullet uses the company's patented Power Port tip — a polymer nose insert with a pressure-expansion chamber that drives consistent and rapid expansion across a range of impact velocities. The resulting wound channel performs well on whitetail deer and similarly sized game at the hunting distances where the 400 Legend is most commonly deployed: inside 200 yards in timber or agricultural settings. The load is sold in 20-round boxes at a retail price of $48.99.

Remington notes that a Premier AccuTip load in 350 Legend is also in development and will be added to the line in the near term. The 350 Legend has a broader installed base than the 400, so that addition would extend the AccuTip franchise to a wider range of hunters running that cartridge in bolt actions or AR-style platforms.

The arrival of a premium hunting load in 400 Legend from a major manufacturer is a notable supply-chain milestone for the cartridge. The 400 Legend has been available primarily in Winchester's own ammunition and a handful of budget loads, leaving a gap in the premium hunting-ammo segment. Remington's entry fills that shelf space heading into fall deer season, when hunters in straight-wall states are choosing loads for the season.

Hunters running 400 Legend rifles in bolt-action or AR platforms who have been waiting for a factory premium load have it now. Availability at large-format sporting goods retailers and regional gun shops is expected to build through September and October as distribution moves down the channel ahead of the early deer seasons in Ohio, Iowa, Illinois, Indiana, and other straight-wall states.
