Meridian Defense Corp has begun shipping the Trench-103, a limited-production AK-103 platform chambered in 7.62x39mm that takes its visual cues from the improvised field-painted rifles that have become a fixture of modern warfare imagery. The Firearm Blog covered the rifle this week, and Ballistic Magazine first reported on the platform in late June. The rifle is available now through Meridian's direct channel.
Where most AK aesthetics borrow vintage military surplus styling, the Trench-103 builds the aesthetic into the manufacturing process itself. Every example leaves the Meridian shop with an individually hand-applied Cerakote finish, meaning no two rifles come out identical. Meridian offers the Trench-103 in three colorways — Midnight Varan, a deep black finish; Dubok Shadow, a brown woodland-inspired pattern; and Steppe Ghost, a heavier green grassland blend — and describes each as carrying its own character based on how the hand-finishing process lays out on that specific receiver.
The foundation under that finish is Meridian's proven AK-103 platform, built around a U.S.-made cold hammer-forged, chrome-lined barrel with a 1:9.45-inch twist rate optimized for 7.62x39mm. Every Trench-103 ships with an UltiMAK M1-B gas tube optic rail, a low-profile Picatinny mount that allows a red dot or scout optic to ride forward of the receiver without compromising the AK's characteristic handling or cheek weld. A folding stock rounds out the package, keeping the rifle compact for transport while preserving full-length shooting utility.
Meridian is keeping production deliberately tight on the Trench-103. The handwork involved in finishing each rifle individually is part of why the model exists, and it necessarily limits how many can leave the shop in a given period. MSRP is set at $2,249, and the company is filling orders through its direct sales channel at meridiandefensecorp.com. Meridian also offers the MDC-103 Pestilence, a related 7.62x39mm variant available through select dealers such as Collectors Firearms for buyers who want a Meridian AK-103 platform with different finish specifications.
The Trench-103 arrives at a moment when AK-platform demand from American civilian shooters remains robust, and when hand-finished or artisan variants of proven military patterns are drawing serious collector and enthusiast attention. Meridian Defense Corp has built AK-pattern rifles for the U.S. market for several years and earned a reputation for tight tolerances and quality control before expanding into the more specialized Trench series. Buyers looking to secure one of the limited-run Trench-103s should order directly and plan for lead time given the production constraints inherent to a handwork-intensive production process.
