Federal Ammunition has introduced the Cosmic, a new 12-gauge target load built around a UV-reactive Podium wad and neon-colored hulls engineered to glow under black light. The Outdoor Wire published the launch announcement on September 8, with Hunting Life and The Firearm Blog both confirming the new load is now shipping to dealers.
12-gauge 1⅛ oz No. 8 UV-fluorescent target shotshell for clay shooting
The Cosmic's specs land squarely in the standard sporting clays window: a 1⅛-ounce payload of No. 8 shot at 1,145 feet per second out of a 12-gauge hull. The distinguishing element is the Podium wad, which Federal has infused with UV-reactive dye. Under black light, the wad and the hull both glow bright enough to be visible downrange during nighttime or low-light shooting events. Federal's engineers used the same Podium platform found across the company's top-tier target lines — a wad known for consistent shot-cup release and clean patterns — rather than building a new low-performance novelty shell around the UV trick. That design decision puts the Cosmic in practical territory for shooters who want the light show and a round that groups like a competition load.
The market context matters. Sporting clays participation has grown steadily over the past several years, and the evening and night shoot format has become a significant draw for clubs looking to pull in new participants and extend shooter hours past sundown. Range operators running 5-stand nights under black lights have had to source shells from costume parties and gimmick aisles or settle for standard loads that offer no visual effect. Federal's Cosmic gives club pro shops a purpose-built answer at a price that lands in the mainstream target-load segment.
Hunting Life reports that the Cosmic is already moving through the distribution pipeline. The Firearm Blog noted the load in its September 9 roundup of Federal and Remington products now reaching dealers ahead of the fall season. Federal has not disclosed a per-box MSRP at launch, but the load is expected to be priced alongside the company's American Target and Top Gun target lines rather than at a premium.
The Cosmic joins a busy fall calendar for Federal's ammunition team, which is also shipping the new Raptor Steel waterfowl line and expanded Master Class 20-gauge loads ahead of the hunting season opener. For clay shooters looking to source the new UV loads before an upcoming night event, the distribution push is underway and regional sporting goods stores and pro shops should have inventory in the weeks ahead.
