SureFire Releases the XC3 Sub, a Purpose-Built Light for Subcompact Handguns

SureFire has released the XC3 Sub WeaponLight, a purpose-built weaponlight for subcompact and micro-compact handguns, with The Firearm Blog publishing the full technical breakdown on September 14. The XC3 Sub is the first model in SureFire's XC3 family specifically engineered around the abbreviated rail sections on micro-compact pistols — a gap that has long pushed carry shooters toward lights designed for larger frames or toward less capable compact options.

Running on SureFire's included SFRCR123 rechargeable lithium battery, the XC3 Sub delivers 1,000 lumens and 13,000 candela, which the company rates for positive target identification out to 228 meters in low-light conditions. Shooters who prefer a standard primary cell can run the XC3 Sub on a single CR123A lithium battery at reduced output: 550 lumens and 7,200 candela, with an identification range of 170 meters. Runtime on the rechargeable cell is 45 minutes. The beam uses a hybrid pattern combining a tight center hotspot for positive identification with a wider corona for near-field situational awareness — a configuration that trades raw throw for the broader peripheral awareness that close-quarters carry engagements typically require.

Compatibility with subcompact rails is addressed through swappable rail adapters included in the box. Supported platforms at launch are the Glock 43X, Glock 48, Springfield Armory Hellcat, H&K CC9, and the SIG Sauer P365 family. Those five platforms cover a significant share of the current concealed carry and duty backup market, and the Glock 43X and P365 are widely issued as secondary carry guns by law enforcement agencies. Housing is machined aerospace aluminum finished to MIL-A-8625 Type hard-anodized specification, the same durability standard SureFire applies across its full-size duty weaponlight line. Range USA and Atomic Defense are among the early retailers listing the XC3 Sub as available and in stock, confirming the product has cleared distribution and is actively shipping. SureFire includes a USB-C charging cable for the rechargeable battery with each unit. The combination of rechargeable and primary-battery compatibility gives the XC3 Sub flexibility in duty and carry environments where USB-C charging access is variable — a practical consideration for agencies evaluating the light for patrol-secondary or plainclothes issue.

The subcompact weaponlight category has grown steadily as micro-compact pistols have taken on larger roles in both civilian carry and law enforcement backup programs, but most dedicated compact lights have historically traded output for size. The XC3 Sub's 1,000-lumen ceiling on the rechargeable cell puts it ahead of most competing products in this footprint. Streamlight and Nightstick have both established compact pistol lights in this segment; SureFire's entry distinguishes itself with the MIL-A-8625 construction standard and the dual-power architecture on a platform built specifically for subcompact rails rather than adapted from a full-size chassis. For carry shooters who have been waiting for a duty-grade subcompact light that doesn't require a separate purchase of compatibility adapters, the XC3 Sub is the most complete single-box solution to reach retail so far.

What to watch: SureFire has not yet confirmed whether additional rail adapter kits will be offered separately for platforms outside the initial compatibility list — notably the Ruger Max-9, Mossberg MC2c, and Kimber Micro 9. Holster manufacturers are expected to begin releasing XC3 Sub-compatible kydex listings within the next several weeks as inventory reaches their engineering teams.
