San Tan Tactical has introduced the 1836 Series Ironclad barrel lineup, a four-configuration drop-in barrel family for the AR-15 platform in both 5.56 NATO and 6mm ARC. Soldier Systems Daily posted the announcement on November 5. The release extends the company's established 1836 product family, which previously included the Ranger, Liberty, and Sentinel rifles as well as the Frontier suppressor line.

4150 steel Black Nitride AR-15 barrel in 5.56 NATO or 6mm ARC, four length configurations

The Ironclad lineup covers two calibers across four lengths: 11.5-inch and 16-inch configurations in 5.56 NATO, and 12.5-inch and 18-inch configurations in 6mm ARC. All four are precision-machined from 4150 steel and finished with Black Nitride. San Tan Tactical's press materials feature the 12.5-inch 6mm ARC mid-length configuration as the launch-day standout; the 11.5-inch 5.56 configuration was listed separately in the release rather than included in the main lineup, suggesting it arrives on a slightly different schedule.

Black Nitride, also known as ferritic nitrocarburizing, is a heat-treatment process that hardens the surface layer of the steel and provides corrosion resistance without adding dimensional thickness. It is the most common finish on higher-end AR-15 barrels, maintaining the precision-machined bore while improving durability in the field without the tradeoff introduced by chrome lining.

6mm ARC — Advanced Rifle Cartridge — was developed by Hornady and accepted by SAAMI in 2020. The cartridge operates on a standard AR-15 bolt face and feeds from STANAG-pattern magazines, offering improved long-range ballistics over 5.56 NATO without requiring a heavier platform. Its use in AR-15 builds has grown steadily among precision competitors and long-range hunters, and San Tan's inclusion of two ARC barrel lengths positions the Ironclad lineup for both practical competition and field use.

San Tan Tactical, based in Arizona, built its market presence around the STT-15, a direct-impingement AR-15 it has offered in 6mm ARC since the cartridge's commercial introduction. The 1836 series takes its name from the year Texas declared independence — a nod to the company's heritage branding that runs through the full product line. The Frontier suppressors, also part of the 1836 family, were covered by The Firearm Blog in October.

Pricing was not included in the initial release. San Tan Tactical's direct website lists the 12.5-inch 6mm ARC mid-length barrel as available for purchase; the remaining configurations are marked as coming soon. The company said the 1836 Series will continue expanding with additional products and configurations, without specifying a timeline.

For AR-15 builders working in 6mm ARC, the mid-length 12.5-inch option fills a gap for a more compact suppressor host or CQB-ready configuration in the cartridge. The 18-inch rifle-length barrel addresses the precision end of the spectrum, maximizing muzzle velocity on long-range builds where the cartridge's ballistic advantage over 5.56 is most pronounced.
