FN Browning Group completed its acquisition of Accuracy International on October 30, Soldier Systems Net reported, formally bringing the Portsmouth-based British precision rifle maker under Belgian ownership five months after the deal was announced. The close makes FN the United Kingdom's sole licensed manufacturer of both military machine guns and precision rifle systems for the British Armed Forces.
The acquisition agreement was first announced in May 2026. FN Browning Group, headquartered in Herstal, Belgium, is the parent company of FN Herstal and FN America, among other entities; in the United Kingdom it operates as FN UK, the established supplier of the L110A3 and L7A2 general-purpose machine guns to the British Army. Adding Accuracy International extends that relationship to the sniper and counter-materiel segment.
Accuracy International will continue operating as a standalone brand. The company retains its manufacturing facilities in Portsmouth and its US service and distribution footprint. Founded in 1980 by Olympic shooter Malcolm Cooper, AI developed the L96A1 bolt-action sniper rifle that entered British Army service in 1984 as one of the first purpose-built military precision rifles of the modern era. Its current AX-series lineup — the AX308, AX338, AX50 anti-materiel rifle, and the AXMC multi-caliber platform — is in service with US Special Operations Command and sniper units across NATO.
The acquisition carries strategic weight beyond the balance sheet. FN UK is currently competing for Project GRAYBURN, the British Ministry of Defence program to replace the ageing SA80 (L85A3) as the standard infantry rifle. Securing Accuracy International makes FN the dominant British-rooted supplier of complete small-arms families to UK defence, a factor that may weigh in an MoD source-of-supply evaluation. A separate British Army requirement known as SHAMER is seeking a single sniper platform chamberable in .338 Lapua Magnum, 7.62x51mm NATO, and .300 Norma Magnum — a specification aligned closely with the Accuracy International AXMC.
Financial terms of the deal were not disclosed by either party. Defence Connect reported that FN described the acquisition as strengthening its position in precision and extreme long-range rifle systems. For the North American precision-rifle market, Accuracy International's product lines and its US dealer channel are not expected to change in the near term under the new ownership.
