PROOF Research on May 20 announced PROOF Exponential Twist, a new rifling geometry that replaces the constant-twist profile used in virtually every production rifle barrel with an accelerating twist rate that tightens progressively through the bore length. The Montana-based manufacturer claims the technology doubles barrel life in high-pressure cartridges while improving shot-to-shot consistency by 20 to 50 percent across multiple ammunition lot variations, according to its press release carried by Soldier Systems Daily.
The engineering premise behind PXT is a 95 to 98 percent reduction in the initial bullet engraving angle at the onset of rifling contact, and a roughly 30 percent drop in total engraving force. In a conventional constant-twist barrel, the bullet must immediately conform to the full twist rate the moment it enters the rifling, placing maximum stress on both the projectile and the bore throat. By beginning at a shallower angle and accelerating, PXT spreads that engraving load across a longer portion of the barrel, reducing heat and erosion at the throat — where the bulk of barrel wear originates. PROOF said controlled testing across multiple calibers showed 30 to 100 percent longer barrel life depending on chamber pressure, along with measurable reductions in vertical dispersion attributed to more uniform bullet spin-up from shot to shot.
The technology launches initially in two rifle platforms. The Elevation FDX, a backcountry bolt gun built around a Falkor Defense LW7 action with TriggerTech trigger and Hawkins Precision M5 Hunter bottom metal, starts at $3,499 and is offered in 22 Creedmoor, 6.5 Creedmoor, 6.5 PRC, 7mm PRC, 7mm Backcountry, and 300 PRC. The Elevation MTR FDX, a mountain tactical variant on the same platform, starts at $3,799. Both are in stock now through authorized PROOF Research dealers. The NRA's American Rifleman covered the technology in depth and noted that PROOF is positioning PXT for adoption in military and law enforcement contract barrels as well, where longer service life between replacements translates directly to cost savings per unit. The trade site AllOutdoor also covered the dual-platform launch on May 21 and confirmed the chambering lineup.
PROOF has not announced pricing for standalone PXT replacement barrels sold as components; that announcement is expected later in 2026. Shooters who run PROOF carbon-fiber barrels heavily in high-pressure calibers — particularly those burning fast magnum propellant charges or running suppressed at sustained rates of fire — should watch for retrofit barrel availability before fall hunting season.
